Sixth History Community Licence

There is not only one History…

The Secret Histories are five in number. If there were an unsanctioned, unknown, unlawed Sixth History… it would be your playground.

We’ve opened up our IP so you can use it as a setting for your own creative work – including commercial work – as long as you mark it Sixth History and follow the rules below.

Last updated 28th November 2022

This licence allows you to use some of our (Weather Factory Ltd) Secret Histories intellectual property (the “IP” below) to create and share your own work, whether you’re selling it or distributing it for free.

We want you to feel free to create unofficial content, to share creative and unsanctioned alternate histories to the official Secret Histories content: we call this Sixth History.

So we’ve set out below some rules around what you can and can’t use, and what you can and can’t do, when creating Sixth History content. If you want to do something that you don’t think is covered below then please get in touch.

The IP

This licence applies to fiction, characters, game mechanics and limited artwork from:

      • Cultist Simulator (including DLC);
      • BOOK OF HOURS (including DLC); and
      • The Lady Afterwards,

which together means the “IP”, and your use of which is subject to the Rules below.

This licence does not include use of:

      • the Cultist Simulator, BOOK OF HOURS or Lady Afterwards logos; or
      • any content from any of our other products (although we may update the list of permitted content with further products in the future, so be sure to check back here from time to time).

The Rules

When using our IP to create and share your own content, we ask that you follow these licence rules:

1. Tell people it’s unofficial

Make it clear that your work is non-canonical and not endorsed or sponsored by us: i.e., that it’s unofficial.

You could do this by saying: “[Product] is unofficial content based on [the IP] by Weather Factory Ltd. You can find out more and support [the IP] at [www.weatherfactory.biz].”

Or: “[Product] is an independent work by [Author or Publisher] and is not affiliated with Weather Factory Ltd, Secret Histories or any related official content. It is published under Weather Factory’s Sixth History Community Licence.”

We provide some more examples of suggested wording below.

2. Use the Sixth History logo

You must include the Sixth History logo on any content created under this licence.

You can recolour or resize the logo to fit your needs, but you may not substantially alter the logo other than that.

The logo can be found here:

3. Use our IP as part of your own creation, not on its own

When using our IP, it should not be used on its own as a standalone piece of work.

We are very happy for you to use our IP as part of your own creations, and we encourage you to do so, but you cannot, for example, print a piece of our artwork on its own and then sell it as a poster.

4. Do not (improperly) copy our writing

You are permitted to use our writing only within the limitations of “Fair Use”, and you must not copy all or a substantial part of our writing.

5. Do not exceed revenues of £50,000 per annum

You can sell your content or distribute it for free, but if you do sell it then the total revenue generated from any or all of your content created under this licence must not exceed £50,000 per annum.

If it looks like it will exceed that, then please contact us.

6. Only use the art assets provided

Any artwork at the bottom of this page (“Art Assets You Can Use”) is free for you to use in your content (but you must not use any of our other art).

7. Comply with your local laws

This is your content, so you are solely responsible for complying with the local laws of your country of residence and ensuring that your content does not violate those laws.

Some Examples

To help clarify our licence rules above, we’ve set out some example scenarios. This is not a comprehensive list, but should help to put these licence rights and rules into context:

If you want to… create your own TRPG or board game based on a mechanic from Cultist Simulator
Then you can, so long as you… clearly display the Sixth History logo on the game materials (for example on the product cover) and any other public-facing materials (such as on the website and any marketing materials)
And so long as you don’t… make it look like Weather Factory has endorsed your product or otherwise make it seem like this is official, canonical Cultist Simulator material.
You should say this… “[Game] is an unofficial product based on Cultist Simulator by Weather Factory Ltd. You can find out more and support Cultist Simulator at www.weatherfactory.biz/cultist-simulator.”
And if you want to sell this… Then you can do so! However be aware that there is a total revenue cap of £50,000 per creator per year for content created under this licence.

If you want to… write your own fan fiction story based on characters and plotlines from The Lady Afterwards
Then you can, so long as you… – use your own writing (i.e. you must not directly copy all or a substantial part of our writing from The Lady Afterwards); and
– clearly display the Sixth History logo on the book cover and other public-facing materials
And so long as you don’t… make it look like Weather Factory has endorsed your work or otherwise make it seem like this is official, canonical The Lady Afterwards content.
You should say this… “[Book] is an independent work by [Author or Publisher] and is not official The Lady Afterwards content or otherwise affiliated with Weather Factory Ltd. It is published under Weather Factory’s Sixth History Community Licence.”
And if you want to sell this… Then you can! Provided again that you don’t exceed your annual revenue cap of £50,000, whether for you or your publisher combined.

If you want to… create your own supplement incorporating artwork from BOOK OF HOURS
Then you can, so long as you… – only use art assets from the list [here]; and
– clearly display the Sixth History logo on the materials (it doesn’t have to be every page of the supplement, but it should be, for example, prominently displayed on the cover)
And so long as you don’t… – make it look like Weather Factory has endorsed your work or otherwise make it seem like this is official, canonical BOOK OF HOURS content; or
– directly copy all or a substantial part of the writing from BOOK OF HOURS.
You should say this… “This is an unofficial supplement based on Book of Hours by Weather Factory Ltd. You can find out more and support Book of Hours at www.weatherfactory.biz/book-of-hours.”
And if you want to sell this… Then you can, and you can also change your mind and decide to sell this supplement for a price. Provided again that your total revenue does not exceed £50,000 per annum.

If you want to… sell a T-shirt that features our artwork on its own
Then you are not permitted to do so under this licence. Our IP must be used as part of your own creation.

The Fine Print

We reserve the right to update and change this licence occasionally, at which point the terms of the updated licence would apply to your use of the IP, so please check back here from time to time.
